1. When they say the tables will be 6 feet, make sure your fitted tablecloth is not, in fact, 4 feet long 🙂. (Shoutout to Melissa from @unrefinedfoodsco for bailing us out!)

2. People’s taste preferences can be so different! 95% of people sampling our 3 core flavors were really positive about it! But there was an unlucky 5% who were not a fan. So weird! But we’re going to listen to the 95% 😎.

It’s my first time really going for a fruit-based ice cream, so to be transparent I’m a little nervous about this one.

It was so dang hot in the kitchen that the jam kinda melted into the blueberry base 🫠.

I think I can make it better next time, but my daughters have given this flavor “100 thumbs up”, so maybe this will turn out ok.

🍯 HONEY, NOT SUGAR: Real ice cream needs some type of sugar - not just for taste, but also so you don’t shatter your spoon trying to get a bite (trust me, I’ve tried to go the no-sugar route). Most brands use white refined sugar, since it’s cheaper and easier to store and work with. I use only real honey, which is a whole food packed with bioactive compounds. Honey has been used as a healing food for thousands of years, and does not spike your blood sugar like the refined stuff.

🥚 EGG YOLKS > GUMS: Most store-bought ice creams will use gums to get that velvety ice cream texture. So there I was, on the verge of entering my 30’s, with one mantra playing on repeat in my head: “I have no clue what I want to do with my life, but I’m positive it ain’t this.” Plenty of people have been skeptical, or tried to talk me out of this journey at every turn. I get it, but I just couldn’t live the safe, boring, soul-sucking life everyone expected of me.

Golden Spoon Ice Cream happened by accident, really. I had recently taken up Pickleball on Thursday nights (it’s not just for retirees, I promise), and I was looking for late-night snacks after I got home.

I saw a few people on IG who would use a Ninja Creami to make single-serving homemade protein ice cream. I thought this was brilliant - nobody was selling pints of this in grocery stores, but why not??? Us crunchy folks love our superfood smoothies - why not do the same thing for ice cream?

I didn’t want to drop $300 on a new appliance, but I did have a real ice cream maker in my closet - a gift from my mother-in-law several Christmases ago, still shrink-wrapped.

So I blended raw milk, chocolate protein powder, and a tiny bit of coconut sugar, threw it into the ice cream maker, and…it was a brick. Not even close to passable ice cream.

And so began the painstaking process of research and kitchen testing as I slowly learned the science of how to make actual ice cream. I applied for and went through the EforAll Greater Worcester Business Accelerator program, and for once an idea has finally stuck.

I launched in September of 2024, a few days ahead of my first event, and started selling pints at Greener Acres Farm shortly afterwards. It’s been better received than I really could have hoped for, and I have big plans to expand in 2025 and beyond.

It hasn’t been easy getting here, and I still have a ways to go before I can finally quit my 9-5 job and build this business full time.

Until then, I truly appreciate everyone that has supported me along the way 🙏🤩

Why I Started Golden Spoon Ice Cream (Part I)

I probably shouldn’t have launched this business, to be honest. I already have a stable 9-5 job with a good salary in the medical device industry. And since I’m married, with two young kids, plus a third on the way, and a mortgage to pay for, a reliable and well-paying job is something I should hold on to for dear life.

But I can’t.

Don’t get me wrong, I know I’m lucky to be in this position in life, and I’m grateful for my job to support starting a family in a nice house, nice neighborhood, etc.

But I also resent the 💩 out of my job.

At the end of the day, I’m working to provide more “shareholder value”, no matter how you spin it. Needing to always be at my computer from 8-5, 5 out of every 7 days, for the next 30 years of my life, contributing little to the health of society, just so I can try to squeeze in time with family or do what I want to do for a couple hours at night or on weekends…that makes me want to barf 🤢.

I realized this almost 10 years ago now, when I started working in the “real world”. I had what I call my Quarter Life Crisis: I had the sudden insight that I was living a life that other people told me was the right one: do well at school, go to college, get a steady 9-5 job, start a family, do that for 35-40 years until you retire and can finally have the freedom to do what you want to do.

I knew I wouldn’t be happy or fulfilled in life until I created a life for myself. A life around freedom, and creation, and family, and health; something that truly made a positive impact on the world.

Unfortunately, I had absolutely no clue what to do next.

For the next 8 years or so, I dabbled and experimented. I was a nose hair away from putting my life on hold to go back to school for Physical Therapy. I tried health coaching. I spun up all kinds of ideas about podcasts, Youtube channels, and more unconventional ways to make a living. None of it ended up being what I truly wanted - but I needed to try, needed to explore my options and see what was out there, all while working my “real” job and starting to grow a family.

I took our classic golden vanilla base and introduced real pumpkin, real ginger, a touch of organic spices, and Simple Mills Honey Cinnamon Sweet Thins to make the perfect fall dessert (or at least I think so).

Just had my first event at the Boston Local Food Festival this past weekend!

Behind the scenes: the lead-up to the festival was bananas 🍌. Due to my pasteurization equipment being delayed, the state inspector didn’t give me the green light to make/sell ice cream until 3 DAYS before. So it was an all-out scramble with limited kitchen time, driving all over the state to pick up ingredients and dry ice, minimal sleep cut even shorter by toddler wake-ups, and planning/packing for my first event, where I didn’t know what to expect.

But the results were worth it!

Hundreds of people tried Golden Spoon Ice Cream in its debut, and overwhelmingly people were digging it. I only saw 3 people that weren’t fans - I’m pretty sure more people than that believe that lizard people rule the world, so I’m taking the W.

My biggest takeaway was that I have 3 bomb flavors to start with. Considering that was only the second time I was trying out Collagen Almond Butter Swirl, I’m pretty pumped!

What trying to start an ice cream business looks like most of the time.

In summary:
1. I left the milk, cream, and 3 dozen eggs in the trunk of my car the night before, so I had to trash them

2. I messed up the recipe, because I was rushing in the morning.

3. I got locked out of the kitchen for the first hour, and had to rush the rest of the time.

4. I left the fill spout open at the bottom of the batch freezer, so my ice cream mix just poured straight on the floor.

Believe it or not this was actually a step up from last time!

And even with messing up the recipe, the taste was still really good and the texture was 👌

Just over 2 weeks away from my first event - I’ll have this ice cream making thing nailed down by then, so y’all are in for a good time 🍦

Nutrient-dense superfood ice cream…ooh baby.

My classic Chaga Chocolate Chip, with a double twist:
🍯 Using raw honey instead of coconut sugar
🍫 Doing the chocolate chips stracciatella-style

I was hoping for a more easily scoopable ice cream (thanks to the honey) with more flakey chocolate chips.

The result???

Crushed it 🤩 scooping was easier, the salty dark chocolate flakes were utterly satisfying, and most importantly, it tasted just how rich chocolate ice cream should taste.

This might be the new official recipe - coming to the public next month!!!
